Maternity Benefits and Maternity Leave to Change from July 1: Key Points Employees Should Know

Date: 2026.06.16

Maternity Benefits and Maternity Leave to Change from July 1 2026

From July 1, several maternity-related benefits will be adjusted, including the one-time childbirth allowance, post-maternity health recovery benefits, and maternity leave periods in certain cases.

One-Time Childbirth Allowance Increases to VND 5.06 Million

Under the regulations, the one-time childbirth allowance for female employees giving birth, surrogate mothers, intended parents through surrogacy, or employees adopting a child under 6 months old is calculated at twice the reference level.

From July 1, as the reference level corresponds to the basic salary of VND 2.53 million per month, the one-time childbirth allowance will increase from VND 4.68 million to VND 5.06 million.

Conditions for Receiving Maternity Benefits

Employees are eligible for maternity benefits if they fall under one of the following cases:

– Having paid compulsory social insurance for at least 6 months within the 12 months before childbirth or adoption.

– Having paid compulsory social insurance for at least 12 months, and if required to take pregnancy leave as prescribed by a doctor, having paid social insurance for at least 3 months within the 12 months before childbirth.

– Having paid compulsory social insurance for at least 6 months within the 24 months before childbirth and having to take leave for infertility treatment.

If a female employee gives birth but does not meet the above conditions, the husband may receive the one-time allowance if he has paid compulsory social insurance for at least 6 months within the 12 months before childbirth.

Maternity Benefits Are Calculated Based on Social Insurance Salary

The monthly maternity benefit for female employees is equal to 100% of the average salary used as the basis for compulsory social insurance contributions during the 6 months before maternity leave.

For example, if a female employee pays social insurance based on a salary of VND 10 million per month, the total maternity benefit for 6 months of maternity leave will be VND 60 million.

Prenatal Checkup Allowance and Post-Maternity Recovery Benefits

During pregnancy, female employees may take leave for prenatal checkups up to 5 times, with each leave period not exceeding 2 days. The total leave period during the entire pregnancy must not exceed 10 days.

The daily prenatal checkup allowance is calculated by dividing the monthly maternity benefit by 24 days.

For example, if the social insurance salary is VND 10 million per month, the prenatal checkup allowance is over VND 416,000 per day, up to approximately VND 4.16 million for the entire pregnancy.

In addition, the post-maternity health recovery benefit is calculated at 30% of the reference level. From July 1, this amount will increase from VND 702,000 to VND 759,000 per day.

Female Employees Giving Birth to a Second Child Are Entitled to 7 Months of Maternity Leave

A notable new point is that from July 1, female employees giving birth to a second child are entitled to 7 months of maternity leave, provided that they have one living biological child at the time of childbirth.

In addition, male employees whose wives give birth to a second child are entitled to 10 working days of leave. The leave may be taken in multiple periods, provided that the total number of days does not exceed the prescribed limit and the final leave period falls within the first 60 days from the date of childbirth.

Significance of the New Maternity Policy

The adjustment of maternity benefits and maternity leave periods aims to expand employee benefits, support women after childbirth, and contribute to population policy amid Vietnam’s declining birth rate.

Businesses and employees should update this information early to ensure proper compliance with social insurance regulations and protect maternity-related benefits.
