Falling more in love with Vietnamese Traditional Clothing through the Program “Brother Overcoming Thousands of Obstacles” Setting a Guinness Record
Date: 2025.04.17
Traditional clothing is an inseparable part of Vietnamese life and culture, expressing identity across regions and eras. Each style and material contains the essence of the nation, reflecting the beauty of Vietnamese culture.
Áo dài – Symbol of Vietnamese Beauty
One cannot mention Vietnamese traditional clothing without the Áo dài – a symbol of gentleness and elegance of Vietnamese women. Despite changes over time, the áo dài still maintains its profound cultural and aesthetic values.

The Development Journey of Vietnamese Traditional Costumes
To date, no research has precisely determined when the Áo dài first appeared. The earliest form is believed to be the “Áo giao lĩnh” (in 1744), wide, long, with a diagonal collar, combined with a black skirt and colored belt – similar to the “Áo tứ thân”.
Vietnamese ao dai has gone through many stages with different names: Áo giao lĩnh, Áo tứ thân, Lemur Áo dài, Le Pho Áo dài, Raglan Áo dài, and from 1970 until now, the modern traditional Áo dài.
Áo dài – The Soft Symbol of Vietnamese Women
Despite many changes, the Áo dài has always represented the gentle, elegant beauty of Vietnamese women.
Áo bà ba – The Rustic Charm of the South
Closely associated with the lives of people in the Southern region, the Ao Ba Ba has a simple, comfortable design suitable for both men and women. Today, the Ao Ba Ba still appears frequently in festivals, performances, and daily life.
Áo chàm – The Distinctive Feature of Highland Areas
As traditional clothing of the Tay, Nung, and other northern ethnic minorities, the Ao Cham, though simple and without elaborate decoration, exudes an authentic, charming beauty rich in ethnic cultural identity.

Other Unique Traditional Costumes
Vietnamese traditional clothing is very diverse, reflecting the unique identity of each ethnic group through styles, colors, and materials.
・Chăm ethnic group: Men wear diagonal fastened shirts, shorts, and wrapped skirts; women wear round-necked shirts, pleated skirts, or tube skirts.
・H’Mông ethnic group: Clothing made from colorful linen, including split-collar shirts, pleated flared skirts, leggings, and headdresses with elaborate patterns.
・Mường ethnic group: Men wear round-necked wing shirts, wide pants, and head scarves; women wear long-sleeved shirts and black skirts woven with intricate patterns.
・Thái people (ao cóm): Including the áo cóm, black skirt, and piêu scarf – symbols of the charm and pride of Thái women.
These costumes not only honor the beauty of the wearer but also contribute to preserving and enriching the national cultural identity.

Traditional Costumes – The Pride of Vietnamese People, Especially the Young Generation
Today, images of young people wearing áo dài, áo giao lĩnh, áo nhật bình… appear increasingly common at historical sites, scenic spots, and even abroad. Not only wearing them to express love for national culture, many young people are also passionate about reviving ancient costumes and spreading that pride to the world.
Learning about ancient costumes is to explore a cultural treasury linked to customs, regions, and history – an emotional way to connect with one’s roots.
The Guinness World Record Confirms the Enduring Vitality of Vietnamese Traditional Costumes
The reality music show “Brother Overcoming Thousands of Obstacles” officially set a Guinness World Record with the title “Event with the largest number of people wearing Vietnamese traditional costumes” at the concert on March 22, 2025.
More than 5,000 people wearing áo dài, áo bà ba, áo tứ thân gathered on the “Guinness Path,” under the supervision of international judges from Guinness.
This was not just an impressive cultural event honored by the Ministry of Culture and VTV, but also a moment of pride for millions of Vietnamese – when traditional clothing shone brightly on stage and in everyone’s hearts.
