Date: 2025.12.25

2026 New Year Holiday: Officially approved for 4 consecutive days (Jan 1–4)

The 2026 New Year holiday has been officially approved as a four-day consecutive break, from Thursday, January 1, 2026, to Sunday, January 4, 2026.
This extended holiday is made possible by swapping the working day on Friday, January 2, with Saturday, January 10 of the following week, allowing employees to enjoy a more complete start to the new year.

2026 New Year Holiday Plan

According to the Government Office, the Deputy Prime Minister approved the Ministry of Home Affairs’ proposal to swap a working day in order to extend the holiday period. Specifically:

– Public servants and civil servants: off from Thursday to Sunday

– Employees in the private sector: encouraged to apply the same holiday schedule, while fully ensuring employees’ legal rights and benefits

Work arrangement requirements during the Holiday

The Deputy Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to announce the holiday plan early to all agencies, organizations, and businesses.
Relevant entities are required to:

– Arrange on-duty staff and organize work appropriately to ensure continuous administrative procedures and public services

– Encourage businesses to maintain production, ensure supply–demand balance, stabilize prices and markets, and promote cost-saving and anti-waste practices during the holiday

Level of employee support

The working day swap proposal received 62% approval from more than 76,000 online survey responses.
Most employees support the plan as it facilitates rest, travel, and workforce recovery, while also requesting earlier announcements so businesses can proactively plan production schedules.

Total Public holidays in 2026

In 2026, public servants and employees in Vietnam will have a total of 25 days off, including 11 official public holidays and 14 weekends/compensatory days, as follows:

– New Year Holiday: 4 days
– Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse – Bính Ngọ): 9 days
– Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day: 3 days
– April 30 – May 1 Holiday: 4 days
– National Day: 5 days

Comparison with other Asian countries

Compared to other countries in Asia, Vietnam’s number of official public holidays remains relatively low:

– Laos: 12 days
– Japan: 14 days
– China: 17 days
– Philippines: 18 days
– Cambodia: 27 days

Conclusion

The decision to grant a four-day New Year holiday in 2026 brings tangible benefits to both employees and businesses.
It enables a smoother start to the new year while continuing to ensure stable production and business operations.
